Pack meeting November 15th

The theme of our pack meeting last night was "Indian Nations," and Mrs. Richardson did a great job with coordinating the activities. The highlight of the meeting was a presentation by Sally Wells, President of the Native American Indian Association of Tennessee. Mrs. Wells is a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw, and did an outstanding job of captivating the attention of the scouts with stories of her childhood on the reservation and cultural traditions of the Choctaw. Thank you for attending our meeting, Mrs. Wells!

Our first camping trip!

The entire gang assembled! I think we really had a great turnout for our first organized camping trip--- a big thank you to all who attended.

The scouts (along with our two honorary scouts) on their way to do a little spelunking...

The slithering-through cave of HORROR! Your humble webmistress didn't actually go INTO this cave---

Wouldn't want to be in there during a big rainstorm!

Our fearless pack leader pointing out the finer points of rock formations...

The weather couldn't have been prettier...

This photo is from a trail through an area of sinkholes--- it was created as an eagle scout project (the path that is--- not the actual sinkholes!).

I think I can speak for all the scouts that attended the camping trip this weekend when I say that we had a FANTASTIC time! I will be posting some photos shortly that will detail for you some of our many adventures, including:

*The slithering-through cave of terror!

*The rocky mud-cave

*Bike-riding exhibitions

*Forest exploration

*and All Around Fun!

Special thanks to our pack leader John who arranged our inaugural camping trip, and also to the Smyrna c of C who graciously invited us to their pot-luck on Saturday night.

Boy Scout Badges Pulled Over Lead Paint Concerns

Thursday, October 04, 2007

DALLAS — The Boy Scouts of America said Thursday that a painted, plastic badge commonly worn by some of its youngest scouts is being voluntary recalled after a test revealed high levels of lead in the paint.

As many as 1.6 million of the badges, which are made in China, may be affected by the recall.

"We're doing everything we can," Boy Scouts spokesman Gregg Shields said.

The plastic totem badge is given to Cub Scouts, who are usually between the ages of 7 and 8. The badge has a yellow and blue border, includes a picture of a bear and wolf and reads "Progress Toward Ranks."

No illnesses have been reported, Shields said.

The unacceptable amounts of lead were discovered during a testing of Boy Scouts products, Shields said. He did not know the level of lead the test revealed.

The recall came the same day that the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced recalls of more than a half-million other Chinese-made products because they contain dangerous levels of lead.

The badges are supplied by Kahoot Products Inc., based in Roswell, Ga. The company is calling for a voluntary recall of the badge and asking parents to take them away from their children.

A phone message left with the company Thursday was not immediately returned.

Kahoot has supplied the badge to the Boy Scouts, based in Irving, Texas, for about eight years, Shields said. About 20,000 kits containing the badges have been sold each year since, he said.

The Boys Scouts are continuing to use Kahoot, which supplies 39 products to the organization. Shields said Kahoot has "acted responsibly in initiating this voluntary recall."

Shields said the badge was the first of 94 Boy Scouts products tested to come back positive for lead. More products are being tested, he said.

We had our first pack meeting last night at MTCS, and it was a resounding success! John had some great games for our boys to play, and as you can see, they had a great time. Congratulations to the boys that were presented with achievement beads!

Our popcorn sale has also popped up--- please take a look at this site that details some of the safety suggestions for the sale. If you have questions or need further information, please contact the pack via the email address on the upper right portion of the page, or contact Kernal Holland!

Webelo meeting 9-12-07

The Webelos had a fun meeting today with six scouts present. They learned some interesting information about the American Flag throughout history. The photo above shows two of our scouts learning the proper procedures for raising and lowering our flag.

Pictured below is one of two surviving copies of the 1814 broadside printing of the Defence of Fort McHenry, a poem that later became the national anthem of the United States.

Webelo meeting 9-5-07

The Webelos met today and completed the requirements for the citizenship badge, so we are 1/3 of the way toward earning the Webelo badge.

Also, be sure to put Wednesday, September 26th on your calendars; the Webelos will be meeting at the courthouse/square to get an orientation on our county government. We will have the opportunity to meet our county mayor, Ernest G. Burgess. Please be sure to wear your uniforms.

Parents--- please let John know if you will be going on this trip and/or driving. Thank you.
